Public transport tickets in Stockholm14.01.2017
We believe that the transport system within the county of Stockholm is very well-connected. Traveling through the Swedish capital you will not only get from point A to point B, but you will also get to see fantastic views. What type of tickets are there? How much do they cost? Where to buy? Here are some answers for you.
The public transportation in the county of Stockholm is regulated by SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik or Stockholm Public Transport). The company offers transport services by bus, subway, tram, train or even boat. It doesn’t matter what means of transportation you choose in your day, they are covered by the same types of tickets.
There are the single use travelcards for 24 hours (120 SEK full price/80 SEK reduced price) and for 72 hours (240 SEK full price/160 SEK reduced price). There is also the option for 7 days, but for that you will need an SL Access card (315 SEK full price/210 SEK reduced price + 20 SEK for SL Access card).
The SL Access card is an electronic smart card, which is reusable and transferable. You can use it if you visit Stockholm again in the future, since it’s available for six years. It will be scanned every time you begin your journey or during your ride (in the tram, for example). The SL Access card can be bought at ticket agents, at the subway stations and at the SL Centers (see below).
There are also the single journey tickets. They are available for 75 minutes and can be bought from ticket agents, subway stations, SL Centers, ticket machines, as a mobile ticket with the SL-biljetter app ([Google Play / iTunes]) or with SL Access credit if you already have an SL Access card. Depending on how you buy the ticket, it can costs between 30 and 60 SEK full price / 20 and 40 SEK reduced price, the cheapest being by using the SL Access credit.
You pay the full price if you are between 20 and 65 years old. The reduced price applies, obviously, to those under 20 years old and over 65 years old, but also to students with a Swedish student ID with the SL logo. Children under 7 years old travel for free if accompanied by an adult.
If you have an SL Access card and are staying in Stockholm for more than 7 days, you can load other types of tickets on your electronic card, such as 30/90 days, summer or yearly tickets.
Note that you have to buy your ticket before you get on board. Note. Always board the bus through the first door, where your ticket will be checked. Find here a complete map of all the rail services and here a complete map of bus traffic in the central part of the Swedish capital.
More information on site can be obtained from the SL Centers throughout the city. Here is where you can find them. If you want to contact directly SL over the phone in Sweden, you can call them at the customer services on +46 (0)8 600 10 00, toll free, available 24 hours per day. Even more information, available on the English version of SL’s website: http://sl.se/en/.
